Looking For Work Through Forrest Gump and Kettlebells

By Greg Diener

In today's world, it can be difficult for someone to settle into a job, let alone a career path. Things rarely go in the direction that we plan them as children when we're first asked what we want to be when we grow up (if they did, I'd be the president of Mars by now). The line from Forrest Gump that compared life to a box of chocolates was true - we never did know what we were going to get. Now life and job hunting seems more like lifting kettlebell weights than a box full of decadent truffles. I know what you're wondering: What are kettlebells and what do they have to do with finding a job? That is, admittedly, a very valid question.

Think of your life up to this date as weightlifting, tediously working away to get through each day and slowly building up more strength. Lifting weights isn't always exciting, but it takes programs, determination, and work ethic. Still, after a while, going through the actions can become dull and you could not be seeing the outcomes you desire. Maybe you're no longer interested in your chosen major at school or you find yourself stuck in the daily grind at a dead-end job. This is how kettlebells come in.

Some of you are still scratching your head and wondering: "what are kettlebells?" The answer is simple to explain. Kettlebells are bell-shaped weights with handles attached and their workout involves swinging and three-dimensional motion that differentiates it from traditional strength training. Maybe it's time to break from your old routine and break out some new moves. If you're not satisfied with your day-to-day work, get creative and find something that interests you more.

People don't just desire a job - they want a career path. Really, we would all like to be ready to find exactly what we want to most and get paid for the work we accomplish. But it's not that straightforward - like a workout regimen, finding the right fit for you could involve learning from mistakes. Moreover, you need to be flexible, motivated, and have the stamina to keep going even when you want to give up. I bet the metaphor has begun to make more sense now.

Whether you think of your being and the search for a career in terms of heart-shaped boxes of candy or lifting weights at the gym, it's noteworthy to remember that the decision isn't simple for anyone. If we could all be the astronauts, superheroes, and fairy princesses we dreamed of being as kids, we would be. If we could all be pleased in our first selected career paths, we would be. Some of us our fortunate enough for that to happen, but for others it takes some trial and error. The important thing is to find your strengths and what makes you the happiest and stick with it.
